Yellow Screen of Death?

By Ladin ·
I have a little issue with my computer that i'm not sure exactly how to fix. Occasionallly when i boot up my computer, just before it reaches the desktop(when you can see the cursor but no icons yet) the computer will freeze and these little verticle yellow lines will appear at the top of my screen. They run the whole length of the screen and are about 1/2in long. I have tried all the latest drivers and even old drivers for my e-VGA TNT2 M64 w/32mb ram and nothing will get rid of it for sure. Inoticed over time that its happening less and less, now about 1 out of every 10 boots and before it was about 3 times attempting to boot before a successful boot would occur. Dont know whats up with that. This happens in both win98 and winme but i have no problems in win2k for some reason. I have also tried all the latest AGP drivers for my ABIT KA7 Motherboard. By the way, I used to have a different motherboard in this computer and the same exact thing still happened. I also have the latest bios flash for my card. Any input would be great.

I would try booting to Safe Mode in Win98 to see if you show multiple video cards or monitors in the Device Manager. I have seen some PC's with 10 or more video cards in Safe Mode Device Manager. This causes the OS to choose from the list of video cards and drivers listed there.

Try tellng it that you have just Standard VGA for the next dozen or so boots and see if the problem keeps happening. If the problem persists during this time, the video card is bad (probably its onboard RAM), and replacement is recommended.

Interesting problem...

If you have changed the motherboard without resinstalling the OS then I say go with the above answers. If you have reinstalled the OS then I would say the problem may be with your monitor and how Windows is recognizing it. If you are using the same graphic card then it may also be that in your BIOS you are booting using the on-board controller instead of the AGP card you have.

Lot of "if" answers, I know. Hope one of them helps.

I never thought it could be the monitor since I've used it in the past with another computer and video card and never had this problem and I know that I only have 1 driver installed for both the monitor and video card and they are both non-microsoftdrivers (ones i specifically installed for the devices).

I had a very similar thing happen to me and it turned out to be a defective Plug-n-Play monitor. If you can I would try a different monitor.
