Apple’s fourth-generation Apple TV 4K arrives Nov. 13, 2026, for $299, nearly twice the $149.99 price of Google’s TV Streamer (4K). Both devices offer 4K streaming, voice assistants, and smart-home controls, but Apple’s latest model costs significantly more.
The new Apple TV 4K adds an A19 chip, built-in microphones for hands-free Siri AI, and support for four-speaker HomePod surround sound. Google TV Streamer offers Gemini for TV, Matter and Thread connectivity, and support for major HDR formats at a lower price.
Google’s streaming box is available now, while Apple is accepting preorders ahead of its November launch. The choice depends on streaming needs, existing smart-home devices, and whether Apple’s additional features justify spending another $149.

How we compared
We evaluated both streaming devices using six buying criteria:
- Price and availability: Current US prices, release dates, and purchase options.
- Streaming quality: Supported 4K, HDR, and audio formats.
- Hardware: Processor capabilities, storage, memory, and connectivity.
- Voice assistants: Siri AI and Gemini features, requirements, and controls.
- Smart-home compatibility: Connected devices, supported ecosystems, and home-theater options.
- Real-world performance: Independent reviews and manufacturer performance claims.
Specifications and prices come from official Apple and Google documentation. Independent reviews provide additional evidence of Google TV Streamer’s performance.
Apple TV 4K has not yet shipped, so its A19 performance claims cannot be checked against Google’s hardware through independent testing. Apple’s announced CPU and GPU improvements are relative to the previous Apple TV 4K.
Price and availability: Google costs $149 less
The fourth-generation Apple TV 4K costs $299 in the US. Preorders opened Oct. 13, with availability beginning Nov. 13.
Google TV Streamer launched in September 2024 at $99.99. Its price increased to $149.99 in 2026, according to Google’s current store listing.
That leaves a $149.01 price gap.
Although Google TV Streamer is no longer a $100 device, it remains considerably less expensive than Apple’s upcoming model.
The price difference may be difficult to justify for households that primarily use streaming apps and have little interest in Apple’s additional smart-home features.
Neither device requires an Apple TV+ or Google TV subscription simply to operate. Individual streaming services may charge separately.
Performance: Apple’s A19 chip vs Google TV Streamer
Apple TV 4K adds the A19 processor
Apple’s fourth-generation streaming box uses the A19 chip, which the company says delivers up to 50% faster CPU performance and twice the GPU performance of the previous generation.
The processor includes a dedicated AV1 decoder for handling supported video streams more efficiently.
The added processing power could improve navigation, app performance, and gaming, particularly for Apple Arcade users.
However, Apple has not released independent performance results comparing the new device with Google TV Streamer.
A faster processor also does not automatically produce better picture quality when both devices are playing the same supported streaming format.
Apple has not yet published a complete fourth-generation technical specification sheet confirming RAM, storage, and wireless networking details.
Google TV Streamer offers 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos
Google TV Streamer includes 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage.
Its supported video formats include Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG, with 4K HDR playback at up to 60 frames per second.
Audio support includes Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby Atmos.
Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.1, Gigabit Ethernet, and HDMI 2.1.
In its September 2024 review, The Verge found the device faster than older Chromecast hardware but less responsive than some premium streaming competitors.
Those results reflect the hardware and software available at the time of testing.
Google TV Streamer already supports the major picture and sound formats used by streaming services. Apple’s A19 may offer faster navigation and gaming performance, but independent testing is needed to establish the difference.
Siri AI vs Gemini for TV
Apple TV 4K supports hands-free Siri AI
The new Apple TV 4K includes three far-field microphones, allowing users to issue voice commands without picking up the Siri Remote.
Apple says echo cancellation helps the device recognize spoken requests while television audio is playing.
Siri AI supports conversational questions, entertainment recommendations, and follow-up requests about movies and television shows.
Users can also issue smart-home commands through Siri.
Some personalized features require a compatible Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad. Siri AI availability also depends on supported languages and regions.
Importantly, Siri AI is available in beta on Apple TV 4K models from the second generation onward.
Owners of those devices do not need the new $299 model simply to access Siri AI. The fourth-generation box adds built-in microphones for hands-free operation.
Apple users should check the Siri AI requirements before deciding whether an upgrade is necessary.
Google TV Streamer has Gemini for TV
Google began rolling out Gemini for TV to Google TV Streamer in November 2025.
Gemini replaces Google Assistant for eligible users and supports natural-language questions, entertainment recommendations, and information about shows and other topics.
Users activate Gemini through the microphone button on the Voice Remote.
Unlike Apple’s fourth-generation streaming box, Google TV Streamer does not have built-in far-field microphones for hands-free voice requests.
Gemini availability varies by account, language, and region.
Apple therefore offers a hardware advantage for users who want to control their television from across the room without reaching for a remote.
However, there is no independent head-to-head testing establishing which assistant provides more accurate answers or better recommendations on these devices.
Smart-home features: Apple Home vs Google Home
Apple TV 4K expands HomePod surround sound
Apple TV 4K serves as an Apple Home hub, allowing users to manage compatible smart-home accessories and automations.
The fourth-generation model adds support for a four-speaker surround setup using compatible HomePod mini 2 and second-generation HomePod speakers.
Apple says the system can use matching front and rear speaker pairs, automatically adjusting audio timing and playback.
This gives HomePod owners another way to use their speakers for television audio.
However, building a complete system adds considerably to the cost.
Four HomePod mini 2 speakers at $149 each cost $596. Together with the $299 Apple TV 4K, the total reaches $895 before tax.
The new Apple TV also supports AI-generated camera activity descriptions and summarized notifications through compatible Apple Home features, subject to the required devices and subscriptions.
For people already using Apple Home and HomePods, those features offer integration with equipment they may already own.
Google TV Streamer supports Matter and Thread
Google TV Streamer functions as a Google Home hub, with Matter support and a built-in Thread border router.
These technologies allow it to work with compatible smart-home accessories, including lights, thermostats, sensors, and locks.
The device also provides a Google Home panel for controlling supported accessories from the television.
Its Voice Remote includes a customizable button and a remote-finding function.
Google TV Streamer is particularly suitable for households already using Google Home or Matter-compatible products.
Both devices can support connected-home setups, but neither guarantees compatibility with every accessory. Buyers should check their existing devices before switching ecosystems.
Apple TV 4K vs Google TV Streamer: Which should you buy?
Choose Apple TV 4K for hands-free Siri and HomePod audio
Apple TV 4K is better suited to households using Apple Home, HomePods, Apple Arcade, and other Apple services.
The fourth-generation model offers hands-free Siri commands and expanded HomePod surround sound, two features that may appeal to buyers already invested in Apple’s ecosystem.
At $299, however, it costs almost twice as much as Google TV Streamer.
Existing Apple TV owners should also remember that Siri AI is available on earlier supported generations.
Households considering other connected Apple products, including HomeView, should account for compatibility requirements and the total cost of additional hardware.
Choose Google TV Streamer for lower-cost 4K streaming
Google TV Streamer is the more affordable option at $149.99.
It supports major HDR formats, Dolby Atmos, Gemini for TV, and Matter/Thread smart-home connectivity.
For households that primarily watch Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, and other streaming services, it covers the essential requirements without Apple’s higher upfront price.
Google’s 2026 price increase has reduced its original affordability advantage, but it remains $149.01 cheaper than Apple’s new device.
Its main compromises are older wireless hardware, voice commands that require the remote, and interface performance that independent reviewers found less responsive than some premium alternatives.
Wait for independent reviews if performance is your priority
Apple’s A19 chip promises substantial improvements over the third-generation Apple TV 4K, but its real-world advantage over Google TV Streamer remains untested.
Buyers interested in gaming, interface responsiveness, and demanding applications should wait for independent reviews after Apple’s Nov. 13 launch.
The same applies to shoppers choosing primarily between Siri AI and Gemini for TV. Their conversational accuracy has not been independently compared on these two products.
For everyday 4K streaming, Google TV Streamer offers the lower-cost option. Apple’s fourth-generation Apple TV 4K is better suited to buyers who specifically want hands-free Siri, deeper Apple integration, or four-speaker HomePod audio.
