Malaysian small businesses could get six months of complimentary AI tools to automate routine tasks and develop software. The offer lowers the initial subscription cost of testing Amazon’s AI services, although other implementation expenses may still apply.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched Semarak AI Malaysia on Nov. 4, 2026, offering eligible small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) complimentary access to Amazon Quick and Kiro after an AI readiness assessment. Working with local partners GD XCHANGE and VSTECS, AWS aims to enroll 10,000 SMEs by 2028.

The initiative comes as smaller Malaysian businesses face shortages of technical expertise and concerns about implementation costs. AWS has yet to specify detailed eligibility criteria or what participating businesses will pay once the complimentary period ends.

What the six-month offer includes

The offer falls under AI Ekonomi, the business-focused component of Semarak AI Malaysia. It provides access to two AI products:

  • Amazon Quick workplace assistant helps employees search company information, analyze data and automate certain workflows. Potential uses include sales reporting, document summaries and administrative tasks.
  • Kiro development tool helps developers turn natural-language instructions into software requirements, implementation plans and code. It supports internal application development and technical automation.

These applications can involve AI tool calling, which connects assistants to external systems and data sources. IT teams should review integration requirements and access permissions before deploying automated workflows.

AWS is working with GD XCHANGE, the solutions arm of Malaysian logistics provider GDEX, and technology distributor VSTECS. The partnership targets SMEs in e-commerce, retail and manufacturing.

One Malaysian retailer is using Quick and Kiro for competitor-price tracking and demand forecasting. According to AWS, the business can now respond to market changes in hours rather than weeks. The reported improvement has not been independently verified.

Elsewhere in Southeast Asia, Workato introduced free AI agent-building credits in Singapore in October 2026. Both initiatives aim to make AI experimentation more accessible, although their eligibility conditions and usage allowances differ.

AWS opened its Asia Pacific (Malaysia) cloud region in August 2024, allowing customers to host supported workloads locally. However, the SME announcement does not specify where Quick and Kiro will process participating businesses’ data.

Eligibility and costs remain unclear

SMEs must undergo an AI readiness assessment, but AWS’s announcement does not specify the assessment criteria or registration procedures. The announcement also leaves subscription tiers, usage allowances, implementation support and post-trial pricing unspecified.

A 2025 study conducted by Ecosystm, supported by Red Hat and Malaysia’s National AI Office, identified expertise and costs as major AI adoption barriers.

Of the 133 SMEs surveyed, 60% cited insufficient in-house technical expertise, while 52% reported implementation and maintenance costs as barriers. Only 21% had integrated AI across their organizations. The sample came from Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation’s network and was not nationally representative.

Data handling also deserves scrutiny as Malaysia develops proposed AI governance rules addressing risk management and oversight. The proposed legislation is not yet law, but existing data protection obligations remain relevant.

Before enrolling, businesses should confirm data-handling arrangements, usage limits and renewal terms with GD XCHANGE or VSTECS. They should also set measurable goals and assess integration costs before committing resources.

Whether SMEs continue using Quick and Kiro after the complimentary period will depend on their results and the subscription terms AWS has yet to disclose.
