App developers are under growing pressure to identify younger users without collecting even more sensitive personal information.

Google plans to make its Play Age Signals API available to developers worldwide later this year, giving participating apps access to a user’s age range rather than their exact birth date. The tool is currently available in Brazil and is scheduled to reach Australia and Canada by mid-August.

For Android developers, the API could provide a more privacy-conscious way to adjust content, features, and safety settings—but its reach will depend on whether developers integrate it and families opt in.

How Google’s Age Signals API works

The tool allows parents to share their child’s age range with apps instead of revealing a specific birth date. Adults can also share their own age range when requested by developers.

Google said developers can decide how to use the signals based on their apps, audiences, and safety requirements rather than applying the same restrictions across every service.

Age ranges are not shared automatically. Parents must enable sharing and can change or disable the setting at any time. The controls are managed through Google Family Link, allowing parents to establish age-sharing preferences once instead of configuring them separately for multiple apps.
