Microsoft’s Windows 11 Build 28000 introduces version 26H1, focused on next-gen ARM chip support and the new Bromine base, with no new features added.

Nov 10, 2025

Microsoft recently released Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 28000 to users in the Canary Channel, marking the first public appearance of Windows 11 version 26H1. This update bumps up the OS version but doesn’t bring new features or interface changes.

Instead, Microsoft says it’s all about the hardware.

“26H1 is not a feature update for version 25H2 and only includes platform changes to support specific silicon. There is no action required from customers,” the company wrote in the official announcement.

That term, “specific silicon,” is tech talk for specific computer chips. Industry speculation strongly suggests this refers to the next wave of powerful, energy-efficient Arm-based processors, such as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Elite chips and potentially the upcoming Nvidia N1X chips, which are expected to debut on new laptops and devices in early 2026.

Since these chips require special optimizations and platform support in the operating system to function correctly, Microsoft is releasing this tailored version ahead of its regular schedule to ensure the new hardware runs smoothly right out of the box.

Microsoft confirmed that its annual feature update schedule will remain the same, adding, “25H2 remains the primary place for new features. Windows 11 continues to have an annual feature update cadence, with releases in the second half of the calendar year.”

Built on a new foundation: Bromine

This release is also the first version of Windows 11 based on a new internal platform, codenamed Bromine.

According to Windows Latest, Bromine replaces the older Germanium base that powered Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, making 26H1 a technical stepping stone toward the next major release, Windows 11 26H2, expected in the second half of 2026.

The test build mainly includes a few necessary fixes, such as resolving an issue that caused live captions to crash and an issue where the Outlook login window was sometimes inaccessible. As with all experimental builds, there are also known bugs, including reports of the Start menu unexpectedly scrolling to the top and problems with sleep and shutdown functions on some Insider PCs.

At this stage, Windows 11 26H1 is largely irrelevant for most users. Only those testing next-gen ARM laptops or devices will see any impact. Most everyday users with current computers running Intel or AMD chips will continue to receive feature updates through the normal channels and can disregard the 26H1 version for now.
