Automatic logo to network with reboot.

When I reboot my computer the computer reboots and logs onto the network without prompting me for a username and password. We are using win98 Second Edition…I have had a few other computers with the same problem. Is this a fluke with win98se? Isthere a way to correct this?

All you need to do is right-click on Network Neighborhood, select Properties, and change the Primary Network Logon box from “Windows Logon” to “Client for Microsoft Networks”. Click OK and reboot and you should be prompted for your username and password every time.

I’ve seen it with dialups, but never to a computer physically connected to the network.
The easiest way to find out if a save password option is enabled is to do a search on *.pwl and delete it all. Next time you re-boot the machine will need a password for windows, leave it blank (it is easier to manage it in case you ever change the network password), and then the next window will be the network logon window.

      Good luck!

the computer may have Powertoys installed on it, if so you find it in the control panel. Look for “TweakUI” if it is there double click on it & click the network tab to see if automatic logon on startup is checked,if it is not installed it should beon the windows cd in the reskit folder in another folder called power toys. you can install it by right clicking on tweakui, & selecting install from the menu. it also has a paranoia tab in which you can tell it to “clear last user at logon” by checking the proper box. Either way if it is the problem, you should be able to fix it, or if is not installed you should be able to fix it by installing it

I have seen this happen on Win95 machines, but not very often. When it does happen (1 or 2 times in the computer’s lifetime, it is a fluke. However, if it is happening all the time, I would suggest taking the following steps:

      1. Go to Network Neighborhood, Properties, and make sure you have “Client for MS Networks” as your primary network logon.

      2. Go to MS Exploror and search for *.pwl files and delete them.

      3. This is just a guess, but you might want to check to make sure the user has a Network Password (if not, change your policy).

      4. Last suggestion: If all else fails, try reinstalling your network protocols.

      Good Luck!!
