By lheisey ·
I have a static IP assigned to the AP. The AP is connected to a switch. The Router is directly connected to the switch. I have the AP running DHCP since there is no internal DHCP server. Here is my config. Can you see any reason why I can't connect via my laptop and surf the net?

Try this:

Data Preamble Short Preamble =>Long Preamble

Network Traffic Accelerator Off

if OK with the first one
try to turn Network Traffic Accelerator On

The Data Preamble will not stay set to Long. Is there some other setting that affects this?

First all.... I want to be sure you know that if I rate this question acceptable it will close the question. Your answers are helping me along but I don't want to close the question until we rectify my issue. I have gotten beaten up about this in the past. Unless there is another way to rate it acceptable and keep the question open. Otherwise in answer to your questions, XP, SP1... IP config IP address 169.254.24.38 Subnet6 255.255.0.0, no gateway, DHCP=yes, Autoconfig=yes

Have you tried setting the IP address to static (outside of the DHCP range) and see if this will help?

Also, when you do an open "scan" for all available wireless networks, do you see this network listed? If you do not, can you get a friend with a laptop to scan? This should help to cut the possible problem down to the WAP or your system.

Is it safe to presume that everything you are running (WAP and wireless card) are 802.11b ?

Also, since you have no security don't forget to uncheck "WAP encryption required" on your laptop.

wap on laptop is turned off. everything is 802.11b no luck with that scan. Still can't get on.. Gives a DNS error. The thing is I can ping this from my desktop within the LAN but I can't ping that from the laptop outside the LAN. Also it is getting an IP address I assume from the DHCP on the AP. Shoot I am frustrated. I can't see the problem.

By WAP before I meant WEP, but I think you got the point.

At this point I would reset the 3Com access point to wipe the configuration, update the firmware on the unit and do the simplest configuration you can.

If this doesn't work get another device that has 802.11b networking and see if it can see the 3Com. If this fails, I am guessing there is a physical issue with your 3Com and I would seek to return it if it is still under warranty.

Do you have DNS enabled on the router - it must look like this:

Domain Name Server (DNS) Address
Get Automatically From ISP - On
Use These DNS Servers
Primary DNS ... - Manual From your ISP
Secondary DNS - Manual From your ISP (if they have a second one)

If your IP address is 169.254.anything, it isn't talking to the DHCP server. The PC made up that address - that's what APIPA does.

Can hard wired clients access the Internet?

What did you do for IP addresses before the wireless access point was added?
