How to VNC Server on Red Hat 4

by jimklallsoo . Updated 17 years, 9 months ago

I would like to VNC to my red hat linux 4 PC from my windows XP service Pack 2 PC.

I can VNC to all other windows Pc’s etc on my network the only problem i get when VNC’ing is to the RHL4 box

I followed th insructions on this wesite http://skullbox.net/vncserver.php

I am using realvnc4 from real vnc.com to connect.

All i see when i connect to myservername.domain:1 is a grey screen with a vnc server config box in the top left hand corner and a grey (X) cross i can move over the screen.
It seems that the server does not push out the remote Gnome or KDE desktop to me.

How do i cure this?
One point i feel i need to mention is even if i do a service vncserver STOP i still get the same grey background and black cross screen appearing after i input the password.
It looks as though i am still connecting how can this be.

I have stuggled with this one on and off for nearly a week.

Any assitance greatly appreciated
