Is a local password enough even with an encrypted C drive?

I have an encrypted C drive but I believe the encryption happens transparently in the background (I know because it is protected by BitLocker) as I am not asked for an encryption pin or phrase before boot, rather I’m just simply using your regular local Windows login password. I have a laptop setup and am a bit worried about security as I carry the thing around. It’s probably an obvious answer but is pre-boot authentication a good idea despite having an encrypted drive, because it seems that even some nut was to have physical access a local system password ain’t gonna do much?
