keep users off while updating server

By Sue T ·
Is there a way to keep users off of a server while you are updating applications? Servers are windows server 2003 and 2008. For two of the servers they need to stay connected so they can get the updates from another server so disconnecting the ethernet is not an option. One server the users connect using terminal services but another is available so anyone in the world can go to the site the server is hosting. Seems there should be a way of updating server apps without worrying about anyone using it during that time. If more info is needed please let me know.

I will try it. This server isn't using terminal services but your link also had it for non-client connectivity saying you can pause or stop the Net Logon or Server services in Control Panel/Services. It was for nt4 but I will check tomorrow to see if it is possible on 2003 server. Thank you for your help.

Work out for you as the net login services in still used, but remember don't turn this service off if the server is also a DC or you will have lots of fun lol.
