Microsoft Exchange maximum user data sizes

By Neon Samurai ·
So, I can find all sorts of information on how to repair an Exchange data file but nothing on the sizes of such files. Exchange 2007 will support huge user data files but what happens after a file corruption? Is there a maximum mailbox size the admins out there trust against the mailbox repair utility?

During some shop talk with another admin, they mentioned that they limit mailboxes to two or three gig. My first thoughts where server resources and type to sync with Outlook OST files. They replied; no, we've just never been able to consistently repair a larger mailbox size.

But what of backups; just go restore the backup. My understanding is that this would also effect other users (are user mailboxes seporate files that can be restored?). My previously mentioned internet searching suggests that a mailbox repair should be tried before going to the backups locker.

What say you other Exchange admins. Is there a maximum mailbox size for your users and does it relate to data loss and recovery or simply many users versus one exchange box.
