How to convert an iWork Pages file to Microsoft Word format

Find out how to make the most of Apple's free word processing app by saving a Pages file in the Microsoft Word format.

Apple's free and integrated iWork Pages application is a very capable word processing tool that is is essentially a simplified version of Microsoft Word--and macOS users do not need to pay extra for it. Users new to macOS users may not know that iWork Pages files are compatible with Microsoft Office Word.

Follow these steps to save a Pages file in Microsoft's Word format.

  1. Click File from the Menu Bar.
  2. Click Export To.
  3. Select Word from the resulting menu (Figure A).
  4. Confirm the Word option is selected within the Export Your Document window.
  5. Click the Advanced Options option to expand the menu and reveal the Format drop-down box if you wish to save the Pages file as a .doc file (typically used by Microsoft Word 1997 to 2004 versions), but know that, by default, Pages will convert the document to the current standard .docx file format.
  6. Click the Next button.
  7. Specify the filename within the Save As field (Figure B).
  8. Ensure the proper file export location is selected (navigate to the correct directory if you wish to change the location where the new Word document should be stored), and then click the Export button. Note: The Hide Extension check box is selected by default; if you wish to save the filename with the .docx extension, clear that check box before exporting the document.

iWork Pages files to PDF conversion

New macOS users should be happy to learn that saving iWork Pages file in the PDF format popularized by Adobe is equally as easy. Follow the same instructions described above, but select PDF instead of Word in step 3. No additional software is required.
