Microsoft is shrinking its Surface lineup’s footprint without shrinking its ambitions, pairing two compact PCs with a faster Snapdragon chip and a fresh focus on local AI.

This week, Microsoft unveiled the new Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch at Snapdragon Summit, both powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Plus processor.

In Microsoft’s tests against the previous models, the new PCs delivered up to 17% faster Office productivity performance, more than 60% faster graphics, up to 95% faster AI inference on the neural processing unit and up to 18% more efficient battery performance. Results vary by workload and configuration.

Both devices remain fanless, keeping the focus on portability and quiet operation. Microsoft also says Snapdragon X2 was developed with input from its Surface engineering team to better balance sustained performance, power efficiency and on-device AI in thin PCs.

Surface Pro 12-inch gets more capable

The Surface Pro 12-inch remains the more flexible of the two, switching between tablet and laptop modes with its detachable keyboard and supporting the Surface Slim Pen.

Its 500-nit PixelSense touchscreen is 25% brighter than the previous generation, while Microsoft says the new processor adds an extra hour of active web browsing. The device weighs 1.5 pounds and includes two USB-C ports.

Microsoft is also introducing Ink Canvas, an AI-powered pen-focused experience for sketching, annotating, generating images and summarizing text. It comes preinstalled on the new Pro and will reach other supported Surface and Windows devices through the Microsoft Store on Oct. 13.

The Surface Pro 12-inch starts at $1,149.99 and will ship Oct. 13 in select markets. Its keyboard and Slim Pen are sold separately, and Ink Canvas’s AI features require an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription. A 5G configuration will also be available for business customers.

Surface Laptop 13-inch focuses on battery life

The Surface Laptop 13-inch takes a more traditional approach, with a full-size backlit keyboard, precision touchpad and 3:2 PixelSense touchscreen.

The 500-nit display is also 25% brighter, while battery life reaches up to 22.5 hours for local video playback and up to 18 hours of active web use, according to Microsoft. The laptop weighs 2.7 pounds and starts at $1,199.99. Configurations include 16GB or 24GB of memory and 256GB or 512GB of storage.

A mouse built around haptics

Microsoft also introduced a $79.99 Surface Mouse with integrated haptic feedback. It can provide physical feedback for actions such as clicking, snapping windows and aligning objects, while its customizable button can be assigned to Copilot or other shortcuts.

The ambidextrous mouse supports Bluetooth 6.0 and can pair with multiple devices. Microsoft says it contains recycled material and will be sold in Black and Platinum.

What this means for users

For someone buying a lightweight Windows PC, the two models now have clearer roles. The Surface Pro 12-inch is aimed at people who value tablet flexibility, pen input and extreme portability, while the Laptop 13-inch makes more sense for users who spend most of their time typing and working on documents.

Existing owners have less reason to rush. The new processors offer substantial gains on paper, but the physical designs remain largely unchanged. For teams considering these smaller Surfaces, the new chips make performance worth another look. Before buying, IT should check that required apps, drivers and peripherals work on Windows on Arm.
