Apple Tests China’s CXMT Memory for iPhones and MacBooks

Apple is testing CXMT DRAM for iPhones and MacBooks as it considers another memory supplier amid tight supply, higher costs, and U.S. scrutiny.

Apple is looking at a Chinese memory supplier for some of its biggest devices.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the company has tested DRAM from ChangXin Memory Technologies for iPhones and MacBooks, with early talks exploring its use in some devices sold in China. Rising memory costs give the tech giant a strong reason to consider another source.

Washington could complicate any plans that follow.

CXMT has grown into a credible option

Higher component costs have already reached Apple customers, with Mac and iPad prices increasing in June. Memory is among the components facing tighter supply as AI infrastructure consumes more capacity.

CXMT has spent recent years expanding its place in the market. Its LPDDR5X portfolio includes memory for phones and laptops, giving Apple another potential source alongside established suppliers such as Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron. CXMT’s growing presence in China’s chip industry has made the manufacturer a more plausible option for major hardware makers. 

Apple usually works closely with vendors on components tailored to its products. US rules limit how much technical information can be shared with CXMT, leaving off-the-shelf memory as an easier path under current restrictions.

Washington is already watching

CXMT carries scrutiny that Apple’s established memory suppliers do not. A Pentagon list published in June identifies the memory maker as a Chinese military company, while a bipartisan Senate letter urges Tim Cook to keep CXMT and YMTC chips out of Apple products.

Lawmakers want details on which devices are being tested and where the components could be used, with responses requested by August 21. Washington has also tightened semiconductor controls affecting operations in China, adding another hurdle before a CXMT relationship can move from testing to commercial orders.

What APAC IT buyers should watch

If you manage Apple hardware across APAC, watch whether CXMT components remain limited to China-market devices. Country-specific parts could create extra work for organizations that standardize fleets across several markets or track semiconductor origin for compliance.

Supply is the other concern. Moving some Apple demand to the Chinese manufacturer could leave more DRAM capacity at its existing vendors for other hardware makers. AI-driven memory demand has already pressured smartphone production, so a sizable Apple order could influence availability elsewhere in the region.

A confirmed production order would be the point for buyers to reassess lead times and supplier exposure. Until then, Apple’s testing is best watched as an early indication of where one of the world’s largest device buyers may source memory next.
