ChatGPT can now show you an AI-generated preview of an outfit before you buy it, though the image cannot confirm whether it will fit.
OpenAI has introduced a virtual try-on feature that lets users see how clothing and accessories might look on them before making a purchase. The update, announced Thursday, also adds a Favorites feature for saving products, giving ChatGPT a bigger role in the shopping process.
Both features are available on ChatGPT’s mobile and web versions.
How ChatGPT’s virtual try-on works
The new feature appears as a Try On button alongside supported clothing and accessory listings in ChatGPT’s shopping results. Users can select it, then take or upload a selfie to generate an image showing how the selected item might look on them.
The feature uses ChatGPT Images. OpenAI’s current image tool, ChatGPT Images 2.5, offers sharper details, more precise editing and faster image generation, according to the company. ChatGPT also saves reference photos for future try-ons. Users can replace or remove these images through Settings, Personalization and Reference Photos.
A new way to keep track of shopping finds
The second addition, Favorites, addresses a familiar problem: finding an interesting product, leaving the page and struggling to locate it again. Users can now save products directly to their ChatGPT Library or organize them into folders.
The features complement ChatGPT’s existing shopping capabilities, which include product research, comparisons and personalized recommendations.

OpenAI is building a shopping destination
The additions extend ChatGPT’s shopping tools beyond product recommendations to visual previews and saved products.
That strategy puts ChatGPT in competition with established visual discovery platforms such as Google and Pinterest. Google added virtual try-on using shoppers’ own photos in 2025, while retailers have offered similar tools for years.
OpenAI’s opportunity lies in combining these capabilities with conversational assistance. Shoppers can describe an outfit, explore matching products and preview potential purchases without jumping between multiple services. However, the feature’s usefulness will depend on how accurately generated images represent real products and how consistently ChatGPT surfaces relevant shopping results.
What this means for shoppers
For consumers, virtual try-on could make online fashion shopping more interactive and help narrow down choices before spending money. Seeing an item on a familiar face may also make it easier to decide whether a color, pattern or style suits personal preferences.
But a convincing image is not a guarantee of a good fit. An AI-generated preview does not confirm garment measurements, sizing or real-world fit. Shoppers should still consult size charts, product descriptions and return policies before purchasing.
Before uploading a personal photo, users should review Settings → Data Controls → Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI says content from individual accounts may be used for training; turning this setting off excludes new conversations from model training. Ultimately, the update makes ChatGPT a more useful companion for fashion discovery, but shoppers will still need to verify the details that an AI-generated preview cannot show.
