Free Gemini users will soon have fewer models to choose from.
In an updated support document, Google said model-access changes will begin Oct. 9 for personal accounts without an AI subscription. Google AI Plus subscribers will receive an email explaining when the changes take effect for them.
Users on the free tier will lose access to both Gemini Flash and Gemini Pro, leaving Flash-Lite as their only model. Subscribers to the Google AI Plus plan, priced at US$4.99 per month, will retain Flash-Lite and Flash but lose Pro. Regional pricing may differ
Google AI Pro, priced at US$19.99 per month, and Google AI Ultra will retain all three models. In addition, Google AI Pro subscribers will gain access to Deep Think for “maximum parallel reasoning,” an advanced problem-solving mode previously exclusive to AI Ultra.
To govern compute consumption, Google will also let users toggle model effort across “low, medium or high” settings. The company noted that higher effort will deliver more thorough responses, but “will also use more of your limit.”
The toll on everyday workflows
For professionals using personal Gemini accounts, the change narrows the models available for writing, research, and coding tasks. However, Google’s notice does not establish how much performance will differ for individual workflows.
Before upgrading, test recurring tasks with the models available to your account. Compare accuracy, response time, and the amount of manual correction needed to determine whether a paid plan offers enough value.
These changes concern Gemini Apps used with personal accounts; the notice does not announce equivalent restrictions for managed Google Workspace accounts.

What to check before upgrading
Check your account’s rollout notice and model options before changing plans. Higher effort settings also consume more of your usage allowance, so model access alone does not tell you how much work a subscription will support.
For IT managers, the next step is to identify work that depends on personal Gemini accounts and assess whether the available models meet the team’s quality, budget, and data-handling requirements.
