Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg says AI is helping engineers build apps faster, but the company has not disclosed its tools or measured productivity gains.

Meta says artificial intelligence is beginning to shorten the distance between a product idea and a working application.

During the company’s latest earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said AI is accelerating software development across Meta and could allow its engineers to create and test more consumer apps. He cited several recent launches, although the company did not quantify the productivity gains or explain which AI development tools its teams are using.

For software leaders, Meta’s experience offers an early glimpse of how AI could change development cycles and team output—but it leaves open important questions about code quality, security, and the amount of human oversight still required.

Zuckerberg cited Instagram Instants, Forum, and the recently launched Seller as examples of Meta’s renewed push to build more consumer apps. However, he did not specify how extensively AI was used to develop each product.

According to TechCrunch, Meta is also developing an AI bedtime-story reader and a prediction-market app. The company has made several previous attempts to expand its consumer app portfolio, although most failed to gain lasting traction. Threads, which recently reached 500 million monthly users, is a notable exception.

Investors want proof; Zuckerberg is giving them one

Meta has committed substantial funding to AI infrastructure, including new data centers and computing capacity. Investors are increasingly asking when that spending will produce measurable business returns.

Zuckerberg presented faster software development as one early benefit. If AI allows Meta’s engineers to build and test products with less manual work, the company could experiment with more ideas without increasing development costs at the same rate.

However, Meta has not disclosed how much development time AI has saved, whether it has reduced staffing requirements, or how the company measures the quality and security of AI-assisted code. Without those details, its experience is better viewed as an early indicator than a proven model for other enterprises.

However, faster output is only one measure of success. Technology leaders will also need to determine whether AI-assisted development lowers costs without introducing security flaws, maintenance burdens, or poor-quality software. Until Meta releases measurable results, its experience offers a signal of where software development may be heading—not proof that AI has solved its productivity challenges.
