Add Printer Wizard Problems

By greg ·
Hello,

My Add Printer Wizard will open, but my installed printers (1 local and 2 networked) are not displayed.
Clicking on "Add Printer" does not open the actual wiazrd up.
I can "see" the printers are installed if I print from Word.
I'm running XP Media Center and I'm up to date with everything from Windows Update.
The only thing that MIGHT have been installed at about the same time this happened is Lantastic V8.01
Any help is most welcome.
Thanks

Can you print?

You've said you can't see the printers outside of Office applications. Can you actually print from Word?

Do you have admin rights on this machine?

Can you see the printers if you boot in Safe Mode?

You mentioned this may have begun when you installed Lantastic. Is that when you added the network printers? If not, what network were you using to reach them before Lantastic?

Yes - I can (but not in IE)

by greg In reply to Can you print?

Yes, I can print in Winword and other office programs. But I can't do a CTRL+P (or go through File>Print) to print something in IE.
If I hit the print button (piture of a printer) it will print to be default printer (not always the one I want to print to).

Thanks for your help

I do have admin rights, and I'll try safe mode after I finish typing this.
All printers were installed before Lantastic and I only use Lantastic to access some DOS based computers (no printing involved). Otherwise I network with TCP/IP.

restart your print spooler service

If that does not help, uninstall, reboot, and reinstall all printers.

I've done that....

by greg In reply to restart your print spoole ...

I've looked through all of Microsoft knowledge base and I can't find an answer there.
I cannot see the printers in the Printers and Faxes box, even thou they are able to be seen in other programs, WinWord, Office programs but NOT in IE!

then it looks like a deeper problem.

by w2ktechman In reply to I've done that....

Maybe a conflict in the registry. If you are not comfortable editing the registry, then I suggest NOT to as your whole system can become unstable or unuseable. If you want to continue, then please BACK UP all of your data first. Or make a disk image to go back to.

Now that I said that, backup your registry.
Once complete, search your registry for all instances of printers (by name of printer, etc.)but not all entries marked "printer" or you could hose many a program. Delete all of the keys that are named after an installed or once installed printer.

note, you will not be able to delete some keys, this is normal.

After this is done, reboot and try setting up (installing) all printers again.
If this fails, run a chkdsk on the system to see if your HDD has bad blocks. You may need to reinstall your system if this does not work.

Registry

Thanks for your help.

Do any of those registry repair programs work, or am I best not to touch them?

Any that you use or know works?

Thanks

I hack my own registry,

and have not really used any of the programs except 1 that takes snapshots, so I get a before and after shot for various testings.

but I believe most are for tweaking rather than fixing issues.
regedit and regedt32 are the registry tools that I am familiar with.
