Configure old router as access point; stuck.

My wifi extender is not boosting my century link fiber signal across the house. I have an old netgear nighthawk that I want to hard wire and put in another part of the house as an access point. I have read multiple tutorials but I’m stuck.
I hooked up the netgear to the CL router AND also tried connecting directly to the CL fiber interface. The netgear shows it is accepting the internet signal but 1) I can’t connect to the netgear’s wifi (“connected, no internet available”) and I can’t access the netgear configuration through the ip address in a browser. I hve factory reset the netgear. Is there a specific wiring configuration I’m supposed to use? Is what I’m trying even possible?
