    Don’t Believe Dell about XIRCOM

If you enjoy blue screens as much as I do, careful when you re-install a Dell Inspiron laptop that uses a Xircom 10/100 Modem 56 PCMCIA. DON’T use Softex as Dell instructs whatever you do.

Install your Xircom PCMCIA card using only Xircom drivers and not the drivers that come on the Dell installation CD. BE SURE to set your I/O to 0xD8000 and if your IRQ is 10 or higher, set the IRQ Style to PCI. If it’s 9 or lower, set it to ISA. If you set your IRQ Style to Auto-Detect sit back and enjoy your pretty blue screen.

Next hurdle: Before installing the modem driver, run NT Diagnostics. Verify that your CBE and Serial are both using the SAME IRQ or you can sit back and enjoy your blue screen again.

Good luck. I’d never wish the week I’ve just spent on my worst enemy.
