How to copy Internet Explorer favorites to new phone’s MS Edge

    Locked

    by snydermslmd ·

On my old phone, I had been using Internet Explorer for years. Now on my new phone, I am using MS Edge. I would like to get my several hundred Favorites on my old phone copied over to my new phone to work in MS Edge. How can this be done?

We don’t know what type of phone you are using now or previously. Impossible to confirm without knowing more. What have you attempted so far?

Normally, you would simply import your favorites from one device to another. If the phone uses Android, you install Google on the new one and the favorites are automatically transferred from your Google account. You will get more advice by confirming the phone make/model and the OS version that you are currently using.

My old phone is a Samsung S8, Android 9, running Samsung’s Internet Explorer app. My new phone is a Motorola Edge, Android 12 with both MS Edge and Google Explorer installed.

I did a transfer of data the day I got the new phone and all my apps and the data related to each app came over to the new phone. The only 2 areas that didn’t get new data was my calendar events, which I have now succeeded in getting accomplished with help from TechRepublic’s Priya and friends. Now I need to finish this phone upgrade with getting several hundred favorites from Samsung Internet Explorer to my new Edge’s MS Edge.

      What might work:
      1. Install the MS Edge app on your old phone.
      2. See if it offers an option to import your favorites from Internet Explorer.
      3. Sync the favorites to your new phone via your Microsoft Account.

But let me note that, although I saw an Internet Explorer app in the Play Store, it didn’t look to be from Microsoft, but made by some other developer (andywebb). Then it’s kind of unsure if MS Edge will let you import favorites from a third party program like that.

Then in both phones find the folder where the favorites are stored, and copy them from the folder on the old phone to the folder of your new phone.

If everything fails, visit the sites on your new phone in MS Edge and add them to the favorites there.

Thank you for your response. I have MS Edge installed on my old Samsung S8 phone. I am not finding anywhere within that app at import Favorites. Likewise, I’m not finding anywhere with Samsung Internet Explorer where to export Favorites. Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Don’t forget that Samsung didn’t create or provide support for Internet Explorer or Edge, Microsoft does. Samsung provides and supports their own browser admittedly, but it is not the same program. You should reach out to Microsoft in this case.

Birdmantd, on my old Samsung S8, I am using the Samsung Internet Explorer app, not the MS Internet Explorer app, so I’m not sure MS would be much help with the Samsung browser.

As i wrote above (but I see it was unclear):
In both phones find the folder where the favorites are stored, and copy them from the folder on the old phone to the folder of your new phone.
If that fails, visit the sites on your new phone in MS Edge and add them to the favorites there.

Not sure if Internet Explorer on old phone will do this…

but you might try exporting your favorites as an HTML file,
or better yet a JSON file. Then copy the resulting file to
your new phone and either import the favorites from the
JSON file, or load the HTML file and bookmark it as a new
favorite. The first option with JSON will import your actual
categories and links. The second (load the HTML file) will
only present you with a page of links, possibly by category,
but not in the way you are probably accustomed to.

Wizard57M-TR, while this sounds like a very interesting approach, there is no means to “export” from the Samsung Internet app on my old phone (I’ve been looking for a way for days). Additionally, there is no way to import bookmarks using MS Edge on my old phone (I’ve been trying for days). I was able to sync my old phone’s bookmarks to the Samsung cloud using my Samsung account, but now I’m not sure how to go from that cloud to my new phone and I don’t want to use internet explorer anymore on my new phone.

Now it seems to be an issue for Samsung Customer support. After all, it’s their browser and their cloud.

Samsung support was useless. I just got off an hour chat session with a tech and got nowhere. So, it seems my only option is to copy my bookmarks one at a time. My only concern is where to I put each Bookmark URL to then get over to my new phone and how to I then “import” those bookmarks into MS Edge, my default browser on my new phone?

      Final resolution

In reply to How to copy Internet Explorer favorites to new phone’s MS Edge

So, I struck out going to AT&T and to Samsung for help with this problem of getting Favorites from Samsung Internet Explorer to MS Edge. I continued to search the internet for suggestions and ideas. Well it took a while but the only solution I could come up with was to proceed with manually sharing each Favorite in the Samsung Internet Explorer to MS Edge, both on the same Samsung S8 phone. Then once I had all 442 favorites shared over to Edge, all in the same folders as they are in SIE, I turned on signed into my MS account and turned on sync for MS Edge. In about 3 minutes, all 442 Favorites showed up on my new phone, right where I was expecting them to be.

I wish to thank all those who posted ideas and suggestions on this forum, good to know there are people who will reach out and help lost techies.
