    Redundant Server?

    Locked

    by thelven ·

I am trying to put together a redundant server that would sycronize all data from the PDC. What I mean is that it would mirror the data files from the Primary Server to the BDC. In the event that the Server went down mid-day, I could promote the BDC to PDC and still have access to that same data from each workstation. I know this is possible somehow. I already have a RAID 1 on the PDC, but I need additional security. Please give me some feedback – thelven@gte.net

I do not believe this is possible. The share names would be different even if the data is mirrored, because of the server names. You would need 2 sets of security, and somehow prevent your users from accessing the wrong shares. Imagine the confusion.

Build an apps server cluster for redundancy, separate from both the PDC and the BDC, and you will sleep much better at night. I do not think mirroring data between the PCD and the BDC is the way to go.

I don’t think this would work without having to re-map all the workstation shares.

However, there are third-party products available that provide this capability. I wish I could think of some product names, but maybe someone else reading this will be able to fill in the missing details. I’m thinking one product is called Vinca?
