Setting up 5.1 Speakers with TV and PC

    Hey,

I recently got a 5.1 Sound system, as it was on offer, so its a older one. A Logitech Z506.

Currently I have my TV hooked up to my computer using a HDMI cable. Previously I had just been using the TV speakers, but now I have attached this speaker system to the tv, via the headphone jack as this is my only option TV wise.

I was wondering if there is anyway of me setting it up so that Windows actually shows 5.1 sound as option? As the sounds going through the TV it only shows 2.1. While I can hear from all speakers, it makes me wonder if when using Netflix etc, I am only getting 2.1 sound?

When watching movies via software like MPC, I can change the audio decoder settings to 5.1 mix. Which I presume means it just mixes it so its more balanced over the speakers, but again not true 5.1?

Do I need a external sound card for this?

Any suggestions on the best way to set this all up? The speakers do have additional wire set ups, other than the basic one AUX cable in headphones jacket.
