ChatGPT Work vs Claude: Which AI Agent Fits Your Workflow?

ChatGPT Work and Claude now overlap on many of the jobs businesses want to hand off to AI, including research, file analysis, document creation, scheduled work, and tasks that pull information from connected apps.

The comparison is especially timely after major updates from both companies.

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work in July, while Anthropic began merging Cowork into the main Claude experience on Sept. 16. Both can now handle longer, multi-step work, but they differ in automation, connected tools, file creation, and how users move between quick questions and bigger projects.

Recent upgrades make ChatGPT Work and Claude more directly comparable

OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Work on July 9 as an agent for longer projects. It can research and analyze information, work across connected apps and files, and create documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and Sites.

Users can follow its progress, answer questions, change direction, and approve important actions while it works.

Anthropic started with Cowork as a separate space for longer tasks. In its Sept. 16 update, the company said chat and Cowork are becoming one Claude, allowing the assistant to decide whether a request needs a quick answer or a longer task.

Anthropic also added Claude Docs and Slides alongside Claude Design. All three creation tools are in beta on paid plans, including Team. The unified chat-and-Cowork interface is rolling out to Pro and Max first, with more plans to follow.

ChatGPT Work is included with ChatGPT Business. Claude Team already includes Cowork, although the newer unified interface may not have reached every Team workspace yet.

How we compared ChatGPT Work and Claude

We compared the two agents using current OpenAI and Anthropic product documentation, US pricing, plan details, and hands-on reporting from TechCrunch and WIRED.

Our evaluation focused on:

• Longer workflows: How each agent handles research, multi-step projects, files, browser work, and tasks that continue beyond a single response.
• Finished work: The documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and other files each product can create or edit.
• Connected apps: Which workplace services the agents can reach and what they can do once those connections are enabled.
• Automation: Scheduled, recurring, monitoring, and event-triggered work that can run without starting every task manually.
• Team plans: Current Standard and Premium pricing, usage limits, seat requirements, and self-serve team size.
• Hands-on use: TechCrunch’s testing of ChatGPT Work and WIRED’s testing of Claude Cowork, including tasks they completed successfully and problems encountered along the way.

The independent reviews used different tasks and versions of the products, so their results are used as real-world evidence rather than a direct benchmark between the two agents.

ChatGPT Work puts more emphasis on workflow automation

ChatGPT Work can take a goal, break it into smaller steps, work across connected information, and produce a finished file or other deliverable.

It can create or edit documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and analyses. With the relevant Google Workspace connection enabled, Work can also create and edit native Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides.

Scheduled Tasks can run once, repeat on a schedule, or monitor for changes. Users can return later to review the result instead of keeping the original session open.

Work also supports event-triggered tasks for eligible users. OpenAI currently documents triggers for new Gmail messages, Slack channel messages, and supported GitHub pull request activity.

Those connections put more data and actions within the agent’s reach, so businesses should review permissions, approval rules, and audit visibility before expanding access across company systems.

In an August hands-on review of ChatGPT Work, TechCrunch successfully used the agent to move a preschool calendar from email into Google Calendar, create an auto-updating financial dashboard, and build a searchable database of space launches.

The review also found rough edges. Configuring cloud-drive permissions proved confusing, and Google Calendar support could create events but not new calendars. The reviewer also found that some tasks needed higher effort settings to work well.

Claude brings Cowork, creation tools, and chat closer together

Claude’s longer-task experience is built around Cowork, which can coordinate multiple steps, work with files and browser tools, create finished files, and continue complex tasks without requiring the user to direct every step.

Cowork can produce Excel spreadsheets with working formulas, PowerPoint presentations, and formatted documents. Scheduled tasks can run automatically on a chosen cadence or on demand, and cloud-based schedules continue even when the user’s computer is off.

Anthropic’s Sept. 16 update changes how users start that work. In the new Claude experience, users make a request and Claude decides whether it needs a quick response or a longer task.

Claude Docs and Slides add more editing inside the same workspace. Docs can be exported to Word, PDF, Markdown, or Google Docs. Slides can be edited and presented inside Claude or exported to PowerPoint or PDF.

A January WIRED hands-on test of Claude Cowork found that the agent correctly sorted screenshots into folders and updated Google Calendar after the reviewer bought movie tickets manually.

The same test hit problems when Cowork tried to batch-archive promotional emails. WIRED eventually switched the request to deleting the messages, which the agent completed as instructed. That review covered an earlier Cowork release, before Anthropic’s newer cloud, scheduling, Docs, Slides, and unified-interface updates.

Claude can also carry memory into Cowork tasks. Anthropic lets users view, edit, or delete individual memories, pause memory without deleting it, or reset stored memory entirely.

Connected apps expand what both agents can do

Both products become more useful when they can reach the apps where work already lives.

OpenAI says ChatGPT offers more than 1,400 plugins. Work can use connected services to gather context and take supported actions, depending on the user’s permissions, plan, and workspace settings.

Claude offers connectors for services including Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, GitHub, Microsoft 365, and Slack.

Its Google Workspace connectors can search Gmail and Drive, send email with approval, manage Calendar events, move or share Drive files, and save Claude-generated files to Drive.

With administrator-enabled write tools, Claude’s Microsoft 365 connector can also send email, manage calendars, create or update OneDrive and SharePoint files, and send Teams messages.

Both platforms inherit the user’s existing permissions, while workspace settings can further restrict which connections and actions are available.

Buyers should focus on the apps their teams already use and the actions they are comfortable letting an agent perform.

ChatGPT Business and Claude Team have matching seat prices

Price does not separate the two at the self-serve team level.

ChatGPT Business Standard seats cost $25 per user each month, or $20 per user per month when billed annually. Premium seats cost $125 monthly or $100 per month with annual billing.

Claude Team uses the same US list prices: $25 monthly or $20 per month billed annually for Standard, and $125 monthly or $100 per month billed annually for Premium.

Both platforms let organizations mix Standard and Premium seats in one workspace, and both require at least two paid seats.

Their usage allowances are described differently. OpenAI says ChatGPT Business Premium provides five times the usage of Standard and removes the five-hour usage limit.

Anthropic measures Claude Team against its Pro plan. Standard provides 1.25x Pro usage per session, while Premium provides 6.25x Pro usage per session. Both seat types also have weekly limits, and usage is tracked per member.

Those figures use different baselines, so the multipliers are not directly comparable.

There is also a difference in self-serve team size. ChatGPT Business supports teams of two to 200 employees. Claude Team supports up to 150 seats before Anthropic directs customers toward Enterprise.

Which AI agent fits your workflow?

With matching team prices, the choice comes down more to automation, connected tools, file workflows, and how employees want to work with the agent.

• Best for event-triggered automation: ChatGPT Work. It supports Gmail, Slack, and GitHub triggers alongside one-time, recurring, and monitoring tasks.
• Best for a unified chat and long-task experience: Claude. Anthropic is bringing chat and Cowork together so Claude can decide how much work a request needs, although that interface is still rolling out by plan.
• Best for native Google Workspace editing: ChatGPT Work. OpenAI documents direct creation and editing of Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides when the relevant connection is enabled.
• Best on team list price: Tie. ChatGPT Business and Claude Team currently charge the same US prices for Standard and Premium seats.
• Best for larger self-serve teams: ChatGPT Business. It supports teams of up to 200 employees, compared with Claude Team’s 150-seat ceiling.

Teams already committed to one software ecosystem may be able to narrow the choice based on connectors and admin controls alone. Otherwise, running the same representative workflow through both agents can show which one fits the team’s actual files, permissions, and working habits better.
