The 8 best places in the Midwest to find a tech job

A wide range of companies headquartered outside of Silicon Valley are hiring tech workers. Here's where to find your next job.

While tech jobs are plentiful in Silicon Valley and New York City, companies across the country are looking to hire tech workers as well, according to new research from job search site Indeed.

"Even outside the main tech hubs, job-seekers can find opportunities," said Indeed chief economist Jed Kolko. "It's true that none of the leading eight tech hubs are in the Midwest, and higher-paying tech jobs are increasingly clustered in those tech hubs. Still, some Midwest markets — like Ann Arbor, Chicago, and Milwaukee — offer some of the cutting-edge jobs that you find in Silicon Valley. Others, like Dayton and Kansas City, are seeing more tech job openings."

Many of the available tech jobs right now are found outside of large tech companies or tech startups, Kolko said. "Today, nearly all sectors of the economy rely on technology and need technically skilled workers," he added. "Many industries that have traditionally had a strong presence in the Midwest, like retail, automotive, and finance, are looking for tech workers. Many of the Midwestern employers hiring in tech today are in industries that have long clustered in the Midwest."

One major advantage job seekers may find outside of major urban tech hubs is a lower cost of living, meaning that tech salary will stretch much further, Kolko said. Another recent Indeed report found that after adjusting for cost of living, tech jobs in Cincinnati, St. Louis, and Cleveland pay more than those in Silicon Valley do.
