The iPhone Duo has the highest repairability score iFixit has given a foldable, but that distinction may offer little comfort if the inner screen breaks. Replacing its inner OLED display can cost $999 in the US if the repair is not covered.
In its Oct. 25 teardown, iFixit awarded Apple’s first foldable a provisional 5/10 and investigated reports of cracked displays, bright lines, and crunching near the hinge. The group identified two possible stress points inside the mechanism, but neither theory has been confirmed, and the reports do not establish how widespread the failures are. For current owners, prospective buyers, and IT teams, the findings make it worth examining warranty coverage, repair costs, and access to replacement devices before a failure disrupts daily use.
iFixit identifies two possible hinge pressure points
Using CT scans and a 3D model, iFixit matched reported damage to the Duo’s hinge. A central support bar might fail to lower as the phone closes, pressing against the screen.
Another theory involves a curved guide rail that might not retract. The area sits near the display cable, but 9to5Mac reported that neither cause has been confirmed.
Dust also reached the hinge.
According to The Verge, the Duo collected less fluorescent powder inside than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 or Google’s Pixel 11 Pro Fold, yet particles made it feel crunchy. The test did not establish a formal dust-resistance rating.
The Duo’s 5/10 repair score comes with a $999 catch
iFixit praised electrically releasable battery adhesive, removable trim, and access to several parts. The outer screen survived removal. The score remains provisional pending parts availability, and hinge repairs remain complicated.
iFixit listed $49 without AppleCare or $19 with coverage to replace the nano-texture cover, versus $999 out of warranty for the OLED beneath it. Owners should confirm which component requires service.
The inner-screen repair comparison depends on the service required. Samsung lists $579 for a Galaxy Z Fold8 inner-screen module replacement and $419 for an eligible screen-only repair. iFixit lists inner-display service for Google’s Pixel 11 Pro Fold at $568. The Duo’s $999 fee is $420 more than Samsung’s module replacement, $580 more than its screen-only option, and $431 more than Google’s listed service. Repair scope, eligibility, and local pricing vary.

Repair precautions for iPhone Duo owners, buyers, and IT teams
The teardown cannot establish how often screens fail. Repairability does not equal reliability, and buyers should weigh repair access alongside the software limitations identified in early reviews.
- Already own a Duo? Watch for unexpected resistance, crunching, or bright lines. Don’t force the hinge. Document symptoms, back up your data if possible, and request a warranty assessment before agreeing to paid repairs. Apple’s limited warranty covers manufacturing issues but excludes accidental damage; consumer-law rights may also apply.
- Considering buying? Check the Duo’s AppleCare+ subscription price and applicable service fees against the $999 OLED cost. If you cover multiple personal devices, compare the eligibility and terms of AppleCare One Family. Check local service availability and how you’ll manage without the phone during repairs.
- Managing work devices? Test backups and account recovery, plan for spare handsets, and include possible screen replacements in the budget. A limited rollout can help gauge support needs.
A good repairability score only helps if the repair is available and affordable. For someone relying on the Duo for work or banking, the real cost of a screen failure also includes lost access to important apps, account recovery, and time without a working phone. Businesses should add spare-device inventory, repair turnaround, and warranty terms to the purchase calculation, not just the device’s $1,999 price.
Until tests establish why screens have reportedly failed and how frequently, buyers should consider whether they can absorb a substantial repair bill and the disruption that comes with it. The Duo’s 5/10 score is encouraging for repair access, but it should not be mistaken for a guarantee of screen reliability.
