Top companies for remote jobs in 2023

Virtual call center LiveOps earned the number one spot on the 2023 Top 100 list. LiveOps was recognized for providing “unparalleled” job flexibility and work-life balance to its home-based talent, hiring for various remote jobs in areas like medical and health, customer service, sales and insurance.

Working Solutions, a provider of on-demand sales and customer service agents, and TTEC, a business process outsourcing company, took the second and third places, respectively.

Seven companies have made FlexJobs’ list of top remote employers every year since 2014: CVS Health, Elevance Health, Kelly, PAREXEL, SAP, Stride and UnitedHealth Group.

This year, 28 companies appeared on the list for the first time, showcasing the diverse body of employers embracing remote work. These newcomers include Airbnb, Allstate, DoorDash, Reddit and Lyft.

Methodology for the top companies to watch list

The list is based on an analysis of approximately 58,000 companies and their remote job posting histories in the FlexJobs database between Jan. 1, 2022, and Dec. 31, 2022, the company said. These 100 companies had the highest number of remote job openings throughout 2022. A remote job is defined as a professional-level job that allows the worker to work from home either all or part of the time.

The threshold for employers to make FlexJobs’ Top 100 list has increased from previous years, meaning companies had to have a higher number of remote job listings to earn the distinction.

Companies on the list span a variety of industries, such as biotech, business services, education, finance, healthcare, insurance, retail, software development, staffing, and recruiting and travel.

Having a choice of work environment and location is now a key factor for the majority of job seekers when evaluating new career opportunities. According to FlexJobs, 97% of workers want some form of remote work.

“As it was when we first created the Top 100 list a decade ago, our goal in identifying these remote-friendly employers is to help job seekers connect to remote career opportunities and to celebrate the companies championing for a more flexible future of work,’’ said Sara Sutton, founder and CEO of FlexJobs, in a statement. “Even amid current economic uncertainty and challenges, the continued interest and investment in remote work has created a healthy, robust marketplace for remote career opportunities.’’

The top remote career categories

With remote work shifting largely from a pandemic-era policy to a permanent business solution throughout 2022 for many companies, there are a number of career categories providing steady and promising prospects for remote jobs. These are the top seven career categories that had the greatest number of remote job postings in the FlexJobs database in 2022:

  1. Computing and IT.
  2. Marketing.
  3. Accounting and finance.
  4. Project management.
  5. Medical and health.
  6. HR and recruiting.
  7. Customer service.

Select categories among these top career fields experienced high growth rates — specifically accounting and finance (31%), HR and recruiting (22%), and marketing (20%). This growth was built on the momentum established in 2021, FlexJobs said.

Computing and IT, project management, and medical and health grew more modestly, while customer service dropped 6%.

Other categories for remote jobs, although lower in total volume, also experienced growth. Nonprofit (55%), communications (39%) and legal (33%) saw significant growth in remote job postings in 2022 compared to 2021.

Conversely, historically strong categories such as sales and education did not grow in the past year. Sales stayed stagnant, while education fell 4%.

The top remote job titles

The majority of remote postings in the FlexJobs database were for experienced-level roles (62%), with manager (20%) and senior-level roles (12%) representing approximately one-third of postings. The remaining 6% were for entry-level.

The top 10 remote job postings on FlexJobs during 2022 were for the following job titles:

  1. Accountant.
  2. Executive assistant.
  3. Customer service representative.
  4. Senior financial analyst.
  5. Recruiter.
  6. Project manager.
  7. Technical writer.
  8. Product marketing manager.
  9. Customer success manager.
  10. Graphic designer.
